Unpacking Daniel so it makes sense!

If you haven't read any of the "For You" series, then I cannot recommend them highly enough if you want to understand what individual books of the Bible reveal about the character and heart of God. The first half of Daniel is a Sunday School favourite - four young men willing to stand up to the hubris of mighty kings and surviving literal fire and mouths of lions. Thrilling stuff - for children and adults. And there is much to encourage us in this first half regarding God's sovereignty, delivering power and unwavering plan of redemption. But, the second half of Daniel has always left me, and countless others, baffled. I don't expect that as a child I would have been able to get to grips with how to read and understand apocalyptic literature - but, as an adult, I am grateful for scholars and writers like David Helm who can graciously guide us through the multi-layered symbols and pictures of this dream-like genre. However, reading this book gave me so much more than an intellectual understanding of Daniel; it thrilled me beyond the excitement of stories of men walking through fire and coming out of a lions' den unharmed - essentially it revealed through Daniel's visions that God really is the God of the past, the present and the future; the "same yesterday, today, forever" and we have a glorious hope at the end of life's suffering. "The sovereign God, who moves nations and kings, showed His incredible care for one struggling man. And we can be confident that God loves us, cares for us, and provides encouragements for us too."
