American folktales + Christian expositions

The Legendary Casey Jones brings together many of Geoffrey Thomas’s short stories for the first time, each brimming with the big heartedness, warmth and homespun humour that he is known for.

Sweeping through southern deltas, western prairies and colonial outposts, Geoffrey Thomas introduces a host of extraordinary characters in his mesmerising tales of American heritage: blacksmiths, farmers, frontiersmen try to get by; a brave railroad engineer becomes a national hero; a Native American girl changes the course of history.

The stories included are:

1) Beware of the Words, Smiles and Frowns of Men

2) Brer Fox, Brer Rabbit and the Two Failures

3) The Battle of the Braggarts

4) Jonathan Chapman, Or As He Was Better Known, Johnny Appleseed

5) How a Peddler Learned About The Final Price Being Paid

6) The Hunted Goose

7) The Legendary Casey Jones

8) Fire, Fire, Fire!

9) The Remarkable Story of Pocahontas

10) The Robin and the Bear

Perfect for both Middle Grade and Young Adult readers and teeming with gospel truth and encouragement, Thomas’s stories are a delight. Ages 9-12

Exciting

My favourite was Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox and the Two Failures, but I thought all of them were really good stories with a good Christian meaning. Charlotte,8

More suitable for older children (as suggested)

Ruth (aged 7) says: I found these stories a bit boring (edit from mum: I think this book is better suited to an older child, as suggested, these stories are longer than the other collections of stories)

A real page-turner!

This book had an awesome set of stories. I would recommend them to children aged 10 and under. I was always longing for the next chapter. I would read this book over and over again. There were days when I couldn't put this book down! I really liked it. Isabel (10)

Short, snappy stories

I enjoyed the concise stories in this book. I would recommend this book to primary school age children, though older children would enjoy the facts and the Christian connection.

The legendary Casey Jones

This book is full of interesting morals, that teach us about life in general, spiritual and physical.it is an easy to follow book with many little stories in it. this book was engaging but I think younger readers would benefit from the book more than I did. it would be a good book for family to read with each other because the stories come in bite-size packages, that are easy to read and understand. Short but powerful!

When I first looked at the book, I thought I would rate it 3 stars but now I'm rating it 5 stars. They are as good as the other Geoffrey Thomas books. The best stories were Brer Fox, Brer Rabbit and the Two Failures, The Hunted Goose and The Legendary Casey Jones. Joshua (9)

American Folktales

I loved the that the stories had morals because it helps one find their way through life. The Ledgendery Casey Jones and Other American Folktales could almost work as a devotional book! Although most of the stories are fiction, they are examples of what happens in real life. Elissa (9 years)
