The Bible teems with ironic situations in which the Lord overturns worldly wisdom, doing the unexpected. Beale explicates ways in which this pattern is exhibited in judgment and salvation—finding its greatest expression in Jesus' triumph over death by way of the cross, in which what seems weak and foolish demonstrates God's surpassing power and glory.

Helpful for my Bible reading

This book is a wonderful reminder that God is sovereign over everything. G K Beale helpfully takes us through Scripture, showing us ways in which God ironically overturns human efforts to achieve His purposes and to bless or curse. Without being flippant, this book helped me to see the ironic humour in the way that God acts and to praise Him for being the God who see all and vindicates His people. This book isn't necessarily the easiest read but it has helped me to spot redemptive reversals in my personal Bible reading. I would definitely recommend this book, especially if you are ever tempted to think God is a passive bystander when evil is rife.
