The Cheerful Giver is a short and accessible guide to the topic of Christian generosity. It begins by showing why Christians should be generous, how God’s generosity to us in the gospel should enlarge our hearts and make us generous, before addressing the practical questions of how much people should give and where that giving should be directed.

Easily able to be read in less than an hour and written in a conversational tone, this short book would be an excellent complement to a one-off talk or a short sermon series
on generosity. It would also be ideal for pastors who are looking for a resource that will help as they speak about congregational giving.

Quick read on giving.

Giving is not a subject we perhaps think about much, but a good start would be to read The Cheerful Giver. Des Smith considers three questions: 1) Why give? 2) How much should we give? 3) Who should we give to? The driver for all giving should be our gratitude for the overwhelming generosity of God, who gave his Son Jesus to save us. We should “give whatever your heart chooses to give” (p24). The New Testament never gives a level of giving because the indwelling Holy Spirit changes our hearts to be more like our generous God, as opposed to the Old Testament tithe at a set level. Most helpful is the chapter on where to direct our giving. Our own family must come first (1 Tim 5.8), then Gospel work in our own church and beyond, needy Christians and then needy non-Christians. We are free to be generous, and Des Smith gives us the Biblical principles to guide our hopefully growing generosity.
