The Lost Prince

I loved this latest instalment in the Callanlas Chronicles! H. R. Hess just gets better and better! Her character drawing and storytelling felt even richer and more believable, and her world building even more effective. In this story, which draws on Old Testament stories of the kingdom passing into the hands of an evil queen, a prince, living in hiding, must rally support from the cowed inhabitants of Callenlas if he is to overthrow Queen Neradi. The Lost Prince, Rael, battles with self-doubt and his own shortcomings, as well as struggling, at times, to believe that Elior will return at their hour of need. Hess’s honest exploration of faith and doubt and how to keep going when we muck up is so valuable for teens – yet her wonderful portrayal of Elior and his love, power and faithfulness carries strongly the message that God is unchanging and reliable. Hess is, by a long way, our best author of Christian fantasy – can’t wait for the next book!

The lost prince

The Lost Prince is the third book in the Callenlas Chronicles series by Hannah Hess. The books are in the fantasy genre and are set at different points of history in the country of Callenlas. They are written from a Christian worldview and deal with themes that are important in the Christian life. In the opening chapters of the book, we are introduced to Rael, an adventurous boy who finds out that he is the heir to the throne of callenlas. His father was usurped and killed by the evil queen Neradi, and the people of callenlas have largely forgotten the ways of Elior and the stars. Rael must lead the subjugated Callenlasians to freedom in the hope of king Elior’s return. What follows is a tale of action, peril and sorcery as Rael and our heroes are tested and face trials that they could never have dreamed of. I love the characters, who have to learn how to do the right thing, and are very human and believable. The story itself has great themes such as how we cope with the fallen world we live in, living in the hope of the second coming and loss. The dialogue that the characters have at some points is simply beautiful. Aside from a bit of romance which I wasn’t too keen on, it was all great. I understand that fantasy isn’t everyone's thing, but I think any young person between the age of ten and fifteen will find this an enjoyable and encouraging read. Personally, I preferred the first book in the series, and I think all of the books in the series are very good and well worth reading.
