A simplified and abridged version of John Owen's The True Nature of a Gospel Church and Its Government (first published in 1689).
Theologian John Owen (1616-1683) is well known for his devotional and doctrinal works, sometimes dealing with controversial church issues of his day. He developed strong biblical convictions about the doctrine of the church, expressed in The True Nature of a Gospel Church and Its Government. As much as the Puritans were focused on local church ministry, manuals of pastoral care or local church theology are relatively rare. Owen’s The True Nature of a Gospel Church and Its Government is one of a few exceptions.
This addresses the role of the congregation in the government of a local church and the role of church officers (ministers, elders, teachers, and deacons). Owen outlines a biblical understanding of church discipline, attempting to correct abuses and offer practical counsel. Finally, he stresses the importance of local churches sharing in fellowship with other like-minded gospel churches.
This simplified and abridged version of Owen’s work allows today’s readers to encounter his thoughts and conclusions and to be encouraged and challenged to consider how churches can follow and apply scriptural patterns.
