How to live free of the fantasy trap

One in five Christian women use pornography. One in three visitors to a porn site is a woman. Many, many more women read explicit books like Fifty Shades of Grey. Even more than that write their own pornography – not on paper for publication, but in their heads for their own use.

Helen Thorne knows all this because she’s done it.

But no one talks about it. Our churches are silent on it. There are very few books about it. It is the unspoken struggle of thousands of Christian women – perhaps you, and probably someone you know.

But no more. In this refreshingly honest, resolutely hope–filled and gospel–soaked book, Helen speaks the unspoken. In doing so, she shows how purity is better and more satisfying than fantasy – and that, whoever you are and whatever your struggles, that purity is possible.

Purity is Possible

This is a book about real struggles that I dare say anybody can identify with. Whether your personal struggle is with fantasies in your head, stories in literature, or images and videos online, the author gently and warmly stands alongside you whilst exploring the dangers of these fantasy worlds. Our idolatry is laid bare with careful reference to Scripture, before equally biblical chapters on mercy, purity and liberty point to a glorious hope of renewal. Written with a pastoral heart, a reassuring openness, and an underlying hope of change in Christ, this book is a great place to start for any woman (or even man) who recognises a need for heart change in this area.

Honest, insightful and powerful

Purity is Possible

I just had to write and post about how great this book is. It's such a taboo subject, and yet such a needed resource in our world where temptation is everywhere. Whilst many Christian women can tick the box of 'I've-never-had-an-affair' or 'I'm-single-and-still-a-virgin', this book helps us realise that purity is about so much more than what we do or don't do... It's about our hearts. This book is about the temptation to think and dwell upon the impure... and I love the way Helen Thorne is uncompromising in saying how much this matters. We can't kid ourselves that any sin is ok or somehow acceptable because it is private and 'doesn't hurt anyone'. Most of all, I loved the way this book sings the truth of the gospel: Jesus' death is enough to cover ALL sins, and His love is powerful to woo us and give us something much better than anything sin can offer us. I'd encourage you to buy this book, read it, and talk about it with your Christian friends, aiming to break the silence surrounding the taboo of sexual immorality for women, and to give others the freedom to share their struggles in this area. I feel this is one particular area where the power of besetting sin can be very effectively broken by confessing and becoming accountable to others, and this book is the ideal way in to get this going in your own church context such as in a prayer triplet or small group.
