Paul’s letter to the Romans has been used by God to point people to Himself on so many occasions. It’s content brought about the Reformation of the church in the sixteenth century and the Wesleyan evangelical renewal of the eighteenth. One church historian, Frederick Godet, has said that, “Every revival can be traced to a deeper understanding of this letter”.

In fifty days, you’ll be guided through this magnificent book of the Bible by well–loved Bible teacher, David Cook. There are comments for each day’s portion and David finishes off each reading with some questions for private reflection.

Sobering Truths and Practical Faith in Romans

David Cook’s Romans: Momentous News is a thoughtful and practical devotional that walks steadily through Paul’s letter over 50 days. While I’d rate it around 3 stars overall, there were several aspects I really appreciated. What stood out most was the clarity with which Cook explains the seriousness of sin and accountability. His emphasis that we are judged not only by our actions but by the truth we have received is both sobering and compelling. The idea that people are responsible according to the light they possess—whether through the law or conscience—was particularly well expressed and helped ground Paul’s argument in everyday reality. I also valued the strong stance on doctrine and holiness. The reminder that any teaching which leads to a relaxed attitude toward sin cannot be from God is both necessary and challenging. It keeps the reader from approaching Romans in a purely academic way and instead presses toward real heart change. The inclusion of Augustine’s prayer—“O God, demand what You will, but supply what You demand!”—beautifully captures the heart of the gospel, and Cook does well to highlight how God meets His own standard through Christ. Moments like this gave the book real depth and devotional warmth. Practically, the 50-day structure makes it accessible and easy to engage with regularly. The reflection questions at the end of each section are helpful for personal application and would also work well in a group setting. That said, at times the writing felt a bit straightforward or lacking in deeper exploration, which kept it from being more impactful overall. Still, it’s a solid and useful guide for anyone wanting a structured and reflective way to work through Romans. In summary, a steady and practical devotional with some strong theological insights, especially helpful for cultivating a serious view of sin.

I've tried to wait till day 50 to write a review but on day 35 and I just have to jump in and say this is the BEST thing I've read on Romans. And the best thing I've done in my morning quiet times for ages. It's dense in all the right ways, devotional in all the right ways, and SO readable (I have young kids, so I need this!) I have enjoyed Jesus so much as I've done this study and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for gospel refreshment. The only problem I have is: what to read next! (recommendations welcome ;-) )
