Billy was born on a dairy farm in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1918 just days after the signing of the armistice that ended the frist world world war. At the age of sixteen Billy Graham came to Christ during a Christian revival meeting and it wasn’t long before he felt the call to preach.

With the help of his wife Ruth and many other friends and colleagues Billy Graham set out to preach to the world. The Billy Graham Evangelistic Association was founded and since that day Billy has preached to over 80 million people in more than 185 countries. Millions more have been reached through television, video, film and webcasts. He has founded newspapers; film companies, magazines and radio ministries.

Communism and Apartheid, Segregation and Terrorism – Billy Graham has faced up to all Christianity’s major opponents of the twentieth century. From paying the bail money to get Martin Luther King out of jail to addressing the memorial service in Washington after the colapse of the World Trade centre, Billy Graham has been there for people with practical help and a message of hope that is timeless.

Billy Graham: Just Get Up Out Of Your Seat

I always find Billy Graham biographies to be exciting and inspiring. This one, aimed at young readers, is no exception. The author has researched her subject well and begins by telling of his early years on the farm in North Carolina and his conversion. Significant milestones in his ministry are detailed such as his roots with Youth for Christ. There are also brief accounts of several of his missions, such as Los Angeles in 1949, London and Scotland in the 1950s, New York in 1957, India and Australia in the later 1950s and his missions to Russia in the 1980s. You can read about the beginnings of his ministry on radio and television, although perhaps his influence through books and films could have been included too. It is interesting that the author presents some insights into the thoughts and feelings of Billy Graham’s wife Ruth as she supports her husband during his remarkable ministry. At the end we see Graham as a national statesman as he addresses the nation following the tragic events of 9/11. The book finishes with further questions for discussion and a timeline. This is very good account of the man who has preached the gospel to more people than anyone else.
