We are called to live in the world and not to be of it, Christians face the challenge of how to interact with the world which they can be immersed within, and that often departs from Judo–Christian roots and values.

By exploring Richard Niebuhr’s classical typology, Carson, takes Niebuhr’s five ways of understanding culture and suggests that they are part of a larger vision. By using the bible own storyline and biblical theology he attempts to work out what this larger vision is. Although he finds Niebuhr’s strategy useful as well as others like it, he warns against giving them canonical forces.

This book looks both at the theoretical and the practical, offering ways in which a Christian can untangle current debates about living in the world. The relationship between Christ and culture is not either/or culture paradigm. Carson offers his own paradigm where biblical theology is kept in mind to inform the Christian world view.
