Sam Brewster

Sam Brewster is married to Lucy with four children, Amelie, Jo–Jo, Barney, and Esther. He is a Church of England minister and leads Trinity at Four in Henley–on–Thames. He also writes for Joyful Noise, a UK based music ministry writing songs from the word to the heart for the church. He loves running, reading and music of all genres.

Just As He Said

There was so much truth packed into this little book! This has quickly become one of my favourite children's books that I expect to return to again and again, and I hope that it would be enjoyed by a child more and more as they grow up and understand the concepts more and more.

10ofthose asked me to review Just As He Said, written by Sam Brewster and illustrated by Hannah Jane Lewin. It’s more difficult than people realise to write a children’s book that’s both faithful to the Bible whilst also being engaging for children. I think Sam has got this one spot on – I really love it!

The book is built around the words of Matthew 28:6: “He is not here; he has risen, just as he said.” That verse sets the tone for the whole book.

It’s a joy to read, written entirely in rhyme (how anyone manages that so well, I’ll never know). Sam weaves together four key Gospel accounts: Jesus forgiving and healing the paralysed man, stilling the storm, raising Lazarus from the dead, and Jesus’s death and resurrection. Each story reinforces the central truth that Jesus’s words always come true – just as He said.

What really stands out in this book is that Sam doesn’t stop with retelling the Bible stories. In the second half, he thoughtfully applies them to children’s lives. Each story is gently unpacked - showing children that Jesus forgives them, is always with them, and will raise them to life if they trust in Him. The book ends with a warm, gospel-rich invitation.

I think this would be a wonderful book for under-7s, especially at the younger end. It would make a brilliant Easter gift for toddler groups or families – whether they’re believers or not. For non-believing families, it’s almost like gifting a mini, child-friendly Christianity Explored course.

What a kids book!

I LOVE this book. It teaches children that Jesus has solved the problems of sin, struggle, and death. The rhymes make it engaging for any age (even my one-year-old kept saying "again" after it was finished). It repeatedly gets the message across that we can trust Jesus' words. But the best bit is the last few pages that directly relate each Bible story to us today. I have got some for everyone in my toddler group, it's fantastic!

The verse flows beautifully through events in Jesus' life , with a catchy refrain. Lovely to read again and again.
