Evil hangs over Philo’s family like a thick, dark cloud. His sister, Illyrica, is possessed by a power far greater than anything he knows. There seems to be no freedom from her curse and his mother is desperate to do anything to help her, even sell their boat to pay a magician to cure her. But rumours have come to the town about a prophet with amazing healing powers. Who is he and can he help?

The Victor

A poignant story written by Patricia St John for young people from 9–14 years approximately. Reading it as an adult, I found it to be captivating and moving. Philo, a Syro–Phoenician boy and his family endure poverty, hardship, tragedy made worse by his sister’s sickness. In absolute desperation Philo leaves home to work for his Uncle in Galilee who is married to a Jewess. The story is interwoven with reports about a Prophet who is healing the sick and doing miracles. Philo is sceptical about him but eventually the evidence is overwhelming. Philo and his family’s lives are impacted by the Good News of Jesus as they learn about sin, forgiveness and healing. An uplifting story of lives transformed by faith in Jesus.
