Many Christians, often without even realising it, struggle with a type of Christian perfectionism. We strive to please God but are plagued with anxiety about making mistakes. We want to do God’s will but live with a self-berating inner voice even as we seek to serve him. We sincerely believe the gospel and love Jesus but struggle with never feeling good enough before God.

How can Christians wholeheartedly pursue God without an undercurrent of guilt, fear or anxiety? How can imperfect people experience God's peace while seeking to obey his perfect standards?

Author Faith Chang addresses the struggles of her fellow "Christian perfectionists" through meditations on God’s character. With nuance and care, she writes for those who seek to grow in Christ and live for God’s glory yet live in fear of failure. She explores the Bible to show that as God deals with us as in-process people, he is far more merciful, righteous and patient than we may have imagined. As we consider how he interacts bountifully with us, the weary and scrupulous Christian perfectionist will be freed to pursue God while experiencing his love and peace.

There are prayers between each chapter for specific situations Christian perfectionists face, such as “A Prayer for When You Feel You’re a Fake.” Reflection questions are included for those reading the book in small groups or one to one.

Resting in Grace, Not Perfection

Peace Over Perfection is a gentle and pastoral call to rest in God’s grace rather than striving to earn His approval. Faith Chang addresses something many Christians wrestle with—perfectionism in the Christian life—and carefully unpacks what it looks like, how it can show up in different ways, and how the gospel speaks into it. One of the strengths of this book is its strong biblical foundation. Chang focuses on theology and truth, helping readers recognise distorted thinking patterns and replace them with a clearer understanding of God’s love, our salvation in Christ, and the ongoing process of sanctification. She also touches on religious scrupulosity, acknowledging that for some, these struggles may be connected to deeper mental health challenges. The tone throughout is warm, compassionate, and full of grace. Chang shares parts of her own story, which helps the book feel personal and relatable, and she draws on insights from Christians throughout history to add depth. A particularly helpful feature is the inclusion of prayers at the end of each chapter, offering readers a way to respond to what they have read and bring their struggles before the Lord. Several lines were especially memorable, including: “God didn’t have to speak, but through his precious commands, he has spoken,” and “If drawing nearer to God is the goal, maybe we can aim to return to him a little quicker when we fall instead of staying away because we’re not yet perfect.” These reflections serve as gentle reminders of God’s grace and invitation to draw near. At the same time, some readers may find themselves wanting more practical application. The book leans more toward shaping right thinking than offering detailed guidance for daily living. In certain seasons, this may feel less directly applicable, particularly for those who do not strongly identify with perfectionist tendencies, though there is still much here to prompt reflection and deeper thought. Overall, Peace Over Perfection is an encouraging and grace-filled read, especially for those who struggle with guilt, fear of failure, or a persistent sense of not being enough. It points readers back to the truth that God’s love is not reserved for the perfect but is freely given to those who come to Him in Christ.

I really needed this book

Sometimes we convince ourselves that to become more Christ-like we need to constantly "do more" and when we fail to do so, we feel ashamed thinking we've let people down, or worse - let God down. I am so thankful that this book reminded me to accept my limitations, and lean on God. Praise Him that he sees our imperfections and delights in us anyway and that my many failures won’t stop him from using me.
