The nativity story is often seen as cute and cuddly and for kids. But that’s because some of what really happened at the first Christmas has been edited out of popular retellings! The full, unabridged, uncut story is full of twists and turns, controversy and mystery.

This best-selling book, now revised and updated, tells readers what really happened all those years ago, and why it really matters for our lives and futures today.

Warm and witty, short and easy to read, Christmas Uncut is perfect for giving out at Christmas services and events, or to non-believing family and friends.

A Quick Overview for Those New to the Christmas Story

I gave "Christmas Uncut" three stars because it’s an engaging and easy-to-read reflection on the Christmas story, but ultimately it didn’t offer anything groundbreaking. Laferton highlights how traditional Christmas pageants often miss the mark on telling the biblical narrative, which I found interesting, though not particularly relatable to my own experiences. For anyone who has read the Bible and attended a Bible-believing church, there’s not much new here, but I did appreciate the scriptural quotes and commentary that help tie the Christmas story together. This book is a good introduction for newcomers to the faith or those who may have only experienced Christmas through nativity plays. For those of us who are familiar with the Bible, it’s a nice recap, but nothing particularly special.

A Good Introductory Read, But Not for the Deeply Familiar

"Christmas Uncut" is a quick and engaging read, but it’s really geared towards those who are unfamiliar with the biblical Christmas story or have never really explored its deeper meaning. The author’s commentary, especially his critiques of Christmas pageants that misrepresent the biblical account, might resonate with those who’ve never encountered the true story of Christ’s birth. However, as a practising Christian who regularly attends church and reads the Bible, I found it lacking in new insights. While the scripture references in each chapter offer a helpful recapitulation of the Christmas story, I didn’t feel like I learned anything particularly new. Still, it could serve as a great resource for those unfamiliar with the true significance of Christmas or for someone looking for a simple, accessible introduction to the biblical account of Jesus' birth.

The true Christmas story

This short books looks at the Christmas story biblically from the perspective of different characters in it and then jumps to Easter to fully explain the Gospel. Biblical quotes are in bold to highlight them. A good book to give away.
