Sooner or later, kids have big questions about God, life, faith and the Bible, especially when their friends start asking them about what they believe. A common one is: What happens when we die?

Big questions deserve good answers. This warm, empathetic book looks at what the Bible says to help 9-13s think through this big question for themselves. It tackles common fears and stereotypes about the afterlife, and will excite readers about the promise of the new creation. Lively stories and illustrations make this book easy for this age group to engage with.

Christian studies teacher and school chaplain Chris Morphew has been answering big questions from kids in his classroom for over a decade. He has written over 20 books for children and youth, including Best News Ever, a 100-day devotional for tweens.

Emma Randall has illustrated many books, including Diary of a Disciple.

What Happens When We Die? is part of the Big Questions series: fun and fast-paced books walking kids aged 9-13 through what the Bible says about some of the big questions of life, and helping them to grow in confident and considered faith.

Chris Morphew

Chris Morphew is an author, teacher, and school chaplain living in Sydney, Australia. As a child, he was obsessed with dinosaurs and spaceships, so most of his childhood writing featured either one or both of those things. His latest book is Best News Ever, a 100-day guide to the Gospel of Mark. He enjoys Mario Kart, obscure board games, and superhero movies, and has been told he looks like Chris Hemsworth from the back.

What happens when we die? - It's not what we often think about!

This series is aimed at 9-13 year olds and the author is excellent with his illustrations and making things understandable, but I think as a book on basics the content is good for any age. This one thinks through how we can end up not being excited about eternity with Jesus because we think of it as a pristine dentist waiting room where we don't do very much. It then takes time to think through how wonderful the new earth will be!

A fantastic easy to read book for older children and younger teens

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I first read it on my own in research for some ministry work I was doing and then I read it together with my 11 year old. The chapters are short, and the writing style would appeal to c10 years up to about 14, although I think if you were reading it with a child, it would be suitable for 8+. Chris Morphew takes a tricky and sensitive subject and handles it clearly, compassionatley and faithfully. He gives an understanding that some will be reading it because of sad circumstances that they have had to face, but I would recommend reading this book with any child, as there is so much in this that is central to our faith. Most importantly, he focuses not on heaven, but on the return of Jesus and what life will be like in the new creation. He debunks common myths and answers many questions. He also emphasises the goodness and complete fairness of God, touching on hell and judgement, but always focusing on Jesus' desire for everyone to be able to have eternal life with Him. There are many adults who I know would benefit from reading this, especially those newer to the Christian faith, as this is so accessible and clear to read. I thoroughly recommend reading it, and then reading it again. I would love every person in our church family to read this and truly understand it.
