“For me to live is Christ, and to die is gain” is surely one of the most startling, challenging, and comforting sentences ever uttered. Paul's epistle to the Philippians plumbs the depths of what it means to live and die in Christ. Here we meet Paul in prison, yet joyful in all circumstances and grateful that God is at work, achieving his purposes.

This warmly written and accessible commentary on Philippians offers both insight and encouragement to believers at any stage of their Christian journey. Peter Barnes, a trusted Bible teacher, guides readers through Paul's joyful and Christ-focused letter, drawing out practical applications and gospel-rich truths.

Barnes's commentary avoids academic jargon while still offering rich theological insight, making it a valuable resource for everyday Christians in the UK seeking to deepen their understanding of Scripture.

Whether you're new to Bible study or looking to renew your joy in Christ, Philippians will help you grasp the Apostle Paul’s message of perseverance, unity, and the surpassing worth of knowing Jesus.

Serious yet readable.

This EP Study Commentary on Philippians by Peer Barnes is aimed at the level between the scholarly and the popular. It follows the ESV but the original Greek is often quoted. The views of many different commentators are cited and when wrong refuted sometimes colourfully: for example, on 3.8 (p139) “Liberal biblical critics often cannot tell which way is up”. The New Perspective is also rejected. Preachers will find the inclusion of lots of historical stories useful for sermon illustrations. The key passage on imitating Christ in 2.5-11 is carefully discussed. “Finally” does not mean finally in 3.1 and Barnes brings out the alliteration in the Greek in 3.2. He follows fulfilment theology rather than replacement theology on 3.3. In short, this is a helpful commentary that goes deeper than a popular commentary would while remaining easy to follow and a joy to read – quite appropriate for the epistle of joy.
