Ryle's seminal exposition for a new generation This seven-volume boxset brings Ryle’s Expository Thoughts on the Gospels to a new readership. Featuring a high-quality quarter-bound design that evokes artisanal bookbinding each volume will sit in a boxed case to aid use and increase longevity.

The design, paired with Mary Davis’ lightly modernised text and NKJV Bible translation, enables Ryle’s voice and tone to remain authentic while making it accessible to a new generation.

Selected Commendations:

"Ryle's eloquence on the Gospels often capture the point of a passage with both precision and power. I highly commend these volumes." Mark Dever, Senior Pastor, Capitol Hill Baptist Church & President of 9Marks.org

"I frequently refer to Ryle’s commentary on the Gospels. I am delighted to see this updated version which will introduce another generation to his material." Alistair Begg, Founder of Truth for Life

"Ryle’s work never fails to both comfort and challenge, just as the Word of God itself is known to do. He only elevates the beauty of the Scriptural text he divides." Phylicia Masonheimer, Founder of Every Woman a Theologian

“The writings of J. C. Ryle are a regular help to me as a pastor. His knack for wedding picturesque imagery, pastoral warmth, and potent insight causes his words to sing more than a century after his death. I am thrilled to see this project in print.” Matt Smethurst, Lead Pastor, River City Baptist Church

"The church local and abroad will be blessed as we grasp afresh the grace of God and the ministry of the Spirit as taught by this historic figure in church history." Amy Gannett, Founder of Tiny Theologians

"Generations of believers have been nourished by J.C. Ryle’s practical and spiritual expositions of the Gospels. I hope this modernised edition will reach a wide new audience." Christopher Ash, Writer in Residence, Tyndale House

"J.C. Ryle himself once wrote, 'it would be well if professing Christians in modern days studied the four gospels more than they do.' With that in mind, I am so thankful for the work of 10ofThose in coming out with a new, light modernisation of J.C. Ryle’s Expository Thoughts on the Gospels." Nate Akin, Executive Director of the Pillar Network

“Always fresh, always reliable, and always centred on Christ. I keep coming back to Ryle on the Gospels and have never yet been disappointed. Use this book in your devotional life. Your heart will be warmed with fresh love for Christ and a renewed desire to live for His glory.” Colin Smith, Senior Pastor of The Orchard Evangelical Free Church, Illinois

“Ryle’s Expository Thoughts are vibrant, nourishing, direct, down-to-earth, full of Christ and full of the gospel. They sparkle with spiritual insight and pastoral challenge, and will supercharge your Bible reading!” Andrew Atherstone, Wycliffe Hall, Oxford

"J.C. Ryle had a wonderful ability to let the four Gospels speak to us today with fresh power and eloquence. This beautiful new edition of his Expository Thoughts are sure to be a wonderful companion to anyone reading through the Gospels as well as preachers looking for help applying the life of Jesus to their congregations.” Tim Chester, Crosslands Training

A Magnificent Job!

So, I wanted to read something on John 3, and decided to turn to the good Bishop J C Ryle. Always worth reading. I had a hardback set of Expositary Thoughts published by James Clarke & Co. But, a little while ago I was given a set published by Evangelical Press and decided this was a good time to check these new volumes out. (I did buy the new edition published by Banner of Truth but because I had the previous James Clark set I gave them away. The Banner set are also very nice) Anyway, here is my assessment of the set published by EP - distributed by 10ofThose. EP have done a fantastic job. Each volume is beautifully bound and the way they are bound means they pretty much stay open on their own. The text is beautifully laid out with type that is easy to read. The notes are slightly smaller as in the James Clark editions but not too small making them almost illegible. If I had one criticism, which seems to be a (cost saving?) trend in printing these days, is that the text, for me, could do with being a couple of shades darker. That is just a small criticism. I have read a couple of EP paperbacks by Ryle, with language updated by Mary Davis. In the Expository Thoughts volumes she has been joined in the tack by Graham Hind. Judging by the parts I have read they have done a magnificent job. The set also comes in a very nice presentation box that will sit neatly on your shelf. 10ofThose.com have been selling them at quite a discount so if you do get the opportunity to buy a set do get them! Christmas is coming so send Santa a list. 😊 In fairness the Banner have been selling the set at quite a discount as well. A bit cheaper than EP I think. You pays your money and you takes your choice! My Go-To Devotional Series (and beautifully bound!)

I’ve spent almost six months consuming Ryle’s expository thoughts on Matthew - and my spiritual life is better for it. I’m so thankful for this devotional book, and the Lord has really spoken in my quiet times. Often there’s been a “nugget” of wisdom in these devotionals that’s been just what I needed to hear. Spending half a year in the gospel of Matthew has been worth every second - my knowledge has deepened immensely and I’m so thankful for how the Lord blessed J.C. Ryle with such wisdom and insight. Just incredible. I'm excited to read the rest of these books. And...the books themselves are STUNNING, so beautifully bound, and a joy to open and hold in my hands (and beautiful on a shelf). Thank you 10ofthose! The language is really accessible too which is brilliant. My go-to recommendation for a devotional series!

Outstanding!

Expository Thoughts on the Gospels is perhaps one of the works that comes to mind when J.C. Ryle's name is mentioned. Published in the 1850s, this series of commentaries on Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John remains as useful and relevant today as when it was first released. This modernized edition of Expository Thoughts on the Gospels from Evangelical Press brings Ryle’s timeless insights to a new readership. Lightly updated by Mary Davis and Graham Hind, this edition aims to make Ryle's work more accessible to contemporary readers while preserving the integrity of his original message. As someone who personally owns the Banner of Truth set containing Ryle's original commentary, I can say that while Ryle's works are not so outdated as to be difficult to read, I agree that some of his words and phrases could use an update for today’s generation. Davis and Hind have done an exceptional job modernizing these elements, carefully selecting words and phrases to refresh while remaining true to Ryle’s distinctive voice and tone. The changes are limited to words and expressions that are less used today, ensuring that Ryle's work remains recognizable and faithful to its original form. This new edition also features the New King James Version text for Scripture entries, a thoughtful choice in place of the King James Version that Ryle originally used. Evangelical Press has formatted the text in a highly readable way, with a single-column layout and a clear font size, probably around 11-point. The paper is white, opaque, and easy to turn, and the Smyth-sewn binding ensures that the text block lays flat when opened, enhancing the reading experience. Content-wise, readers will still find the signature Ryle style: straightforward, clear, and marked by a profound simplicity. His writing is deeply pastoral, rich with biblical references, and filled with practical applications that challenge and encourage the reader to live a Christ-centered life. The physical design of the seven-volume set is truly stunning. Each volume is quarter-bound with beautiful cover designs, housed in a sturdy blue slipcase box with elegant gold foil details. This set is undoubtedly one of the most visually appealing collections you will come across. The build quality of each volume is also impressive—they are slim, portable, and lightweight, with a satin ribbon marker in each to guide your reading. Overall, this modernized edition of J.C. Ryle's Expository Thoughts on the Gospels is outstanding. Not only are these volumes beautifully made, but they also make Ryle's wisdom more accessible for this generation and the next. Do yourself and your family a favor, and add this exceptional set to your home library!

Excellent new edition

I'm really pleased with this new box set edition of J. C. Ryle's Expository Thoughts. Ryle has been an excellent guide to the text both devotionally and in preaching prep. This new edition is beautifully presented. The only thing that it's missing is a brief editors' introduction explaining their approach to the modernisation of the text. For example, in the volumes on John, Ryles notes have been retained, but in the other volumes they have been emitted. It would be interesting to know the rationale behind that decision. Either way, I highly recommend this set of Ryle.
