Caring for the Souls of Children

A Biblical Counselor’s Manual

Coming alongside struggling children can feel like an uphill battle. Counselors and parents mistakenly believe children somehow need different answers to life’s problems than adults need—but Christ is always the way.

Children struggle with the same desires adults struggle with, are lured by the same lies adults fall prey to, and can find hope in the same source adults can find hope—in our Lord and Savior.

In this manual for biblical counselors, men and women will learn how to help struggling children with the hope found in our Redeemer as presented in the Word of God. Caring for the Souls of Children equips counselors, parents, pastors, and anyone else who wants to love children with the hope of Jesus to boldly trust in the sufficiency of Scripture.

Rather than relying on different methods to reach children, this manual helps counselors share the truth of Christ—the way, the truth, and the life—all while tailoring interactions and teachings to the understanding of children.

Edited by counseling professional and author Amy Baker, this indepth resource offers the biblical wisdom and practical insights of contributing authors who are experienced in biblical counseling for children.

Caring for the Souls of Children

I bought this book as my ministry role is working with children. I have never had any training in counselling and it isn’t part of my job role, but I felt like it might give me a useful insight into Biblical counselling. It has done just that. It is a really accessible, easy to read and practical guide to counselling children from a Biblical perspective. It covers a range of likely scenarios that you might encounter, based on case studies. However, if I was actually involved in counselling, I would want to know a lot more and have a lot more training than this book provides. It is ideal for those who might be thinking about whether it is an area of interest to them, or for those on the fringes of this type of work. I also particularly found it helpful as a parent. Whilst I hope that my children don’t end up needing the help that the situations in this book covers, I feel that I have at least had a bit of preparation if things do happen that I might have to help my children navigate. Each chapter has a section on how parents can help the Biblical counsellor to support them in their role, and this gives practical insight into how parents can help (or hinder) their child’s progress. I would thoroughly recommend the book to anyone raising children, or anyone working within children’s and youth ministry, especially if you don’t already have any experience in counselling.
