British Text:

This edition uses British spelling, punctuation and grammar to allow the Bible to be read more naturally.

More about the translation:

This revised and updated edition of the NIV includes three main types of change, taking into account changes in the way we use language day to day; advances in biblical scholarship and understanding; and the need to ensure that gender accurate language is used, to faithfully reflect whether men and women are referred to in each instance. The translators have carefully assessed a huge body of scholarship, as well as inviting peer submissions, in order to review every word of the existing NIV to ensure it remains as clear and relevant today as when it was first published.

Good as a Bible to grow up with

This Bible seems versatile for a growing child - younger children will enjoy the colour plates with the simple retellings and as they get older will be able to move over to the proper Bible text and get a lot of help from the various lists in the front, for finding different passages, and the book summaries in the back. I don't know if I have a different edition from the copy used for the video review, but the main drawback for me is the fact that the positioning of the story colour plates are not aligned with the original Bible passages (as described in the video). They are instead interspersed evenly throughout the pages, so the first one - Creation - is within Leviticus, and the life of Jesus begins in the middle of Isaiah. This is not a problem in itself, and each colour plate is labelled with the passage reference and page numbers of the original Bible text, to make it easier to find. However, it is not easy to do this the other way around, ie to find a specific colour plate. There is no contents or index of these stories for younger children, or directions to them from the corresponding Bible text, so there's a lot of guesswork involved in finding the story you want. This does not put me off using the book/recommending it to others but I would most likely add tabs to make those stories easier to find.

NIV Bible for Children

A beautifully presented Bible in the full NIV 2011 text, interspersed with illustrated synopses of some of the better know passages that are suited for reading by or to younger children. Having bought this Bible I realised that it would be good for family readings (we have children 3, 5 and 7) but probably not as a gift to an older child. This is because by the time they are old enough to read the full NIV text themselves (my 7 year old) the illustrations are becoming a bit too "babyish". We haven't listened to the accompanying MP3 audio CD yet but I'm hoping it will be good for car journeys.
