"I have read no book that more carefully, thoroughly, and tenderly displays Christ's heart." —Paul David Tripp, President, Paul Tripp Ministries; author, New Morning Mercies and My Heart Cries Out

Christians know what Jesus Christ has done—but who is he? What is his deepest heart for his people, weary and faltering on their journey toward heaven? Jesus said he is "gentle and lowly in heart." This audiobook reflects on these words, opening up a neglected yet central truth about who he is for sinners and sufferers today.

Too Abstract and Overextended for Its Message

Gentle and Lowly: The Heart of Christ for Sinners and Sufferers by Dane C. Ortlund clearly comes from a sincere and pastoral heart. It’s evident that the author deeply desires to help believers grasp the depth of Christ’s love, and I genuinely respect that aim. However, the execution didn’t work for me. The writing style is very abstract and often overly flowery, which made it difficult to engage with. Rather than building a clear, structured argument, the book leans heavily into reflective and expressive language that, at times, feels unnecessarily drawn out. The frequent references to lesser-known writers from the Middle Ages also made it harder to follow and didn’t add much clarity. It felt like the core message—while good and important—could have been communicated far more effectively in a much shorter format, perhaps even as an essay rather than a 200+ page book. The repetition and length made it feel stretched beyond what the content required. Theologically, there were points I agreed with and others I didn’t, which also affected my overall engagement. That said, my main issue wasn’t disagreement, but clarity and delivery. Overall, I can appreciate the heart behind this book, but the abstract style and lack of concise, practical structure made it a difficult and, at times, frustrating read.
