We live in a world full of shiny distractions, faced with an onslaught of viral media constantly competing for our attention and demanding our affections. These ever-present visual “spectacles” can quickly erode our hearts, making it more difficult than ever to walk through life actively treasuring that which is most important and yet invisible: Jesus Christ. In a journalistic style, Tony Reinke shows us just how distracting these spectacles in our lives have become and calls us to ask critical questions about what we’re focusing on. The book offers us practical steps to redirect our gaze away from the addictive eye candy of the world and onto the Ultimate Spectacle—leading to the joy and rest our souls crave.

A Thoughtful but Overly Theoretical Examination of Media and Faith

Tony Reinke’s Competing Spectacles is undoubtedly a book written with careful thought and depth, but for those looking for practical advice or straightforward application, it may fall short. From the outset, Reinke presents the book as a theological reflection on media in the modern age, and while that’s an admirable focus, the content can often feel more theoretical than applicable. For those of us who prefer a more practical, no-nonsense approach to Christian living, the book’s academic tone and somewhat repetitive nature can make for a laborious read. There are many other books that explore similar territory in a more direct and actionable way. That being said, if you’re deeply interested in the intersection of theology and culture, and you don’t mind a more philosophical approach, Competing Spectacles will provide plenty of food for thought. However, for readers who prefer more hands-on, practical solutions to navigating media consumption as a Christian, this book may not hit the mark.
