How do you feel about how you feel? Our emotions are complex. Some of us seem able to ignore our feelings, while others feel controlled by them. But most of us would admit that we don't always know what to do with how we feel. The Bible teaches us that our emotions are an indispensable part of what makes us human—and play a crucial role in our relationships with God and others.

Exploring how God designed emotions for our good, this book shows us how to properly engage with our emotions—even the more difficult ones like fear, anger, shame, guilt, and sorrow—so we can better understand what they reveal about our hearts and handle them wisely in everyday moments.

Untangling Emotions

Some people steamroll their emotions with truth, while others let their emotions run wild. Groves and Smith write that both approaches miss the point. God made emotions intricately connected to body and soul, and people should engage their emotions as a way to grow. This means identifying the emotion, examining its cause and whether it is a valid response, and then acting accordingly. The authors give excellent illustrations from their counseling experiences, and the clear writing and practical points make this book a pleasure to read. They speak about emotions precisely. For example, our culture values feeling good, but sometimes feeling grieved or angry is a godly response and will come more deeply with spiritual maturity.

Untangling Emotions

This was an excellent read, full of the practical wisdom and applied theology I'd expect from counsellors and authors, Winston Smith and Alasdair Groves. Each page is packed full of gospel-centred truth and hope to help us navigate the often difficult area of our emotional lives. The book is divided into three helpful sections 1) Understanding emotions 2) Engaging emotions 3) Engaging the hardest emotions The authors provide an opening theology of emotions which display part of our image-bearing status before a feeling God. Groves & Smith, engage wisely with the culture around us which tends towards being led by emotions but also warns against a stoic approach to dealing with emotions too. The book provides a brilliant balance of understanding the reality and power of peoples' experience of emotions with what is biblically right and true / wrong and false in that experience. There are many illustrations given to show the practical application of what they write based on many years of counselling experience from both authors at CCEF. There authors also share examples from their own lives which really adds to the very real and personal nature of the book. Most importantly, the book views the subject of emotions through the lens of scripture and it is Christ centred on every page. Buy this book, you won't be disappointed. They get right to the heart of emotions which is both challenging at a personal level and helpful when walking along side others.
