Although he never went abroad, Andrew Fuller was a zealous promoter of world missions, influencing countless missionaries, such as William Carey, and championing the importance of sound doctrine for the perseverance and fruitfulness of world evangelism.

In this short biography, John Piper puts Fuller's movement-inspiring life and theology on display, calling all Christians to devote themselves to knowing, guarding, and spreading the true gospel—even to the very ends of the earth.

More Doctrine Than Biography

I picked up Andrew Fuller by John Piper, expecting a short but helpful introduction to the life of Andrew Fuller. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite deliver that. This is extremely brief and, beyond the bare bones, doesn’t really explore Fuller’s life in any meaningful way. Instead, the book focuses almost entirely on theological discussions—particularly his engagement with hyper-Calvinism and Sandemanianism. While that might be useful for readers already familiar with those topics, it makes the book feel more like a doctrinal sketch than a biography. If you’re not already familiar with the historical context, key figures, and theological debates of the time, this book may be quite difficult to follow. The only reason I was able to get something from it is because I had previously read about William Carey and already had some understanding of the people and context surrounding Fuller. Because of its limited scope, it feels incomplete. It doesn’t really cover Fuller’s life, character, or broader theology in a balanced way—just a narrow slice of his controversies and their connection to the modern missions movement. If you’re looking for a quick overview of his views on those specific issues, this may be helpful. But if you’re hoping to actually get to know the man, his life, or his wider beliefs, you’ll need to look elsewhere. I also didn’t agree with all of the theological perspectives presented (I’m not a Calvinist), which made it harder to fully engage with the material. Overall, this felt like an outline rather than a full picture—more like a pencil sketch without colour. Interesting in parts, but far too limited to do justice to Andrew Fuller.
