"A delightful book to help our children understand how we are all different and we are also the same."—Trillia Newbell, author of God's Very Good Idea and The Big Wide Welcome

This children’s picture book follows a sibling of a child with a disability as they go through their day. A simple story with an important message, Like Me helps kids recognize the many similarities they share with disabled kids and model a loving and understanding approach to the differences.

“God made you, God loves you, God is kind to you.”

It can be hard for children to take those three life-changing truths into their hearts and treat others with love and understanding, especially when they encounter those whose needs differ drastically from theirs.

Through a sibling’s eyes, young readers will tag along on a day of a child with a disability. As the two siblings play with friends, go to therapy, and spend time with family, relatable comparisons will help children understand a different type of family life, building empathy for children with disabilities along the way.

Like Me opens the door to meaningful talks with your child about empathy, compassion, diversity, and God’s love for them and others.

A gentle, thoughtful book about supporting families of children with special needs

I recently finished Accessible Church by Sandra Peoples and noticed an endorsement from Laura Wifler that immediately caught my attention. Intrigued, I sought out her book—partly as a parent of a child with special needs, and partly as a parent of that child’s siblings, who also live this journey in their own way. Wifler’s book follows a day in the life of a young boy and his brother who has special needs. Although no specific diagnosis is mentioned, it’s clear that the brother has both physical and neurological disabilities. Throughout the day, we witness the highs and lows, along with the many accommodations and moments of patience that siblings of children with additional needs so often navigate. A visit to the therapist’s office also introduces readers to a range of other disabilities and support needs. The book moves at a gentle, thoughtful pace. There isn’t a strong plot as such, but it paints a tender portrait of family life and ends with both brothers tucked into bed and hearing the comforting reminder: “God made you, God loves you, God is kind to you.” This is a helpful book to share not only with siblings of children with special needs, but also with their friends. Many siblings act as carers, therapists, and advocates for their brothers or sisters—roles that can feel heavy without peers who understand. A story like this can help foster that understanding. I would also highly recommend Accessible Church.
