Awesome Cutlery

In real life, Awesome Cutlery is Gareth Loh and Dan Adams. They are both dads and church pastors, and Awesome Cutlery is something they do in their spare time. They’ve been friends since university in the early 2000s, and pretend superheroes since 2016. Awesome Cutlery is named after Captain Awesomeness and Cutlery Boy, two wannabe superheroes who appear in sketches on the Awesome Cutlery albums, as well as in their live shows.

All Together Now

Our family love Awesome Cutlery. If you don’t know them, they’re a gospel–loving, music–making, comedy duo: Captain Awesomeness and Cutlery Boy. They’ve changed much of our lives: which CDs we listen to in the car, what my son thinks superheroes wear (cutlery belts), and even the way we say the word ‘brilliant’. Recently, they’ve also been changing our meal times. Not because they’ve launched their own line of eating utensils (which we’d buy if they did), but because they’ve written a family devotional. After the success of their first album, they have produced their second: ‘All Together Now’. It’s brilliant; full of accessible truth, great melodies and hilarious sketches. So, your first step is to get the CD, because the booklet goes alongside it. Each daily devotional is linked to a song, then has different elements like prayers or questions or fun activities of drawing challenges or three–legged walks (this worked better post–mealtime rather than during). The prayers are simple and are easy to understand. The questions are kid–friendly like, “Imagine being a king or queen. What would you like best about having servants?” It also has funny comments around the edges from Captain Awesomeness and explanations from Cutlery Boy. We’ve spent most evenings laughing at those; imagining them said in their familiar voices. In busy family life, these sessions have been a helpful resource. They’re easy and fun, but also provide valuable nuggets of truth to feed our hearts while we munch our meals. And as a side note, if you feel new to family devotionals – we did too! Be encouraged and give this one a go. They’ve done most of the hard work already. Except trying to get kids to walk with their legs tied together. They’ve left that job for you.

All Together Now

Awesome Cutlery is a range of songs and family devotions to ‘help families worship Jesus together’. The book ‘All Together Now’ is to be used in conjunction with a range of songs and is attractively produced. Each page is laid out in the same way: prayer, icebreaker, Bible verse, questions, challenge and then prayer. The devotions are pitched at families and children with little or no Bible knowledge and may be a useful introduction to family devotions or as a steppingstone to resources with greater depth and substance. If you have several restless children who are struggling to sit still after a meal or just before bed these short devotions may well be ideal for you! The book will also be useful with younger children who have a shorter attention span and might only manage a few minutes. This would be an ideal book for new Christians seeking to start family devotions with their children or families with little or no history of family worship.
