Quantity

A simple introduction to Christian history, for those who are interested in refreshing their knowledge or reading about Christians they are broadly aware of, but may not be overly familiar with.  33 Keys Christians are featured, each with a timeline of their life, their background, and their place in Christian history.

God does amazing things through the lives of people who are dedicated to Him. Sketches of Faith tells the true stories of Christians whose lives have been used by God to ignite change and hope throughout the world. Some may be familiar; others less so. Yet each are a testament to the reign and power of Christ’s kingdom.

Sketches of Faith

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It comprises 33 short overviews of the lives of believers throughout history who were dedicated to serving God by spreading the gospel at home and abroad. For me it was a memory jogger, bringing back salient particulars of renowned servants of God. Beginning with the Apostle Paul, it then jumps to John Wycliffe and the 16th century Reformers, subsequently working through the Evangelical Awakening and missionary movement of the 18th and 19th centuries, to finish in modern times with C. S. Lewis, J. I. Packer, Jim Elliot, and Chuck Colson. I was also introduced to James Hannington, John Sung, and William Cameron Townsend – but left wondering about the inclusion of Martin Niemuller. Sketches of Faith could be a primer for the younger generation and an incentive to explore, learn, and emulate. It might also make suitable reading for family worship, educating and informing the next generation. Its publication is surely timely, as there is a real need to stir again the vision given by our Lord’s example and his command to preach the gospel to the whole world. If put into the right hands, this title will stir readers to pray and to act.

Sketches of Faith

These biographical sketches by different authors give enough information to make the reader want to know more. It is a shame there is no–one between Paul and Wycliffe (why not Augustine or Bernard of Clairvaux?), but the spread is quite good apart from John Sung being the only non–westerner. A book to dip into with suggestions for further reading.
