University can and should be a great experience. Don’t see your time as just a means to an end. Make it your goal at university to glorify Christ.

I hope this book will help you flourish and “be bright”. Sure, bright academically through hard study; but also bright spiritually by living a distinctively Christ-centred life. Rumour has it that some atheists are now claiming to be bright. May the joy and love of Christ in you enable you to shine brighter and even warm some of the cynical and hostile folks you encounter.

Be Bright

This book is a helpful guide to life at university as a Christian. Although it’s primarily aimed at helping to prepare Christian young people before they go to university, it would also be valuable for any existing university students to assess their walk with God and revitalise it. There is a great appendix included called “Why go?”: which really helpfully looks at the Biblical principles we can apply in making a decision whether to actually go into Higher Education at all. What are the right and wrong reasons for going to university? The main focus of the book is on understanding who you are in Christ, and applying this knowledge positively to studies, personal and social life, and serving God. It is brimming with Scripture and Scriptural principles; presented in an accessible and fluent way, and is very easy to read in a spare hour or two. The book is also great for those wavering in the faith or those whom you are not entirely sure whether they are saved or not, as it is saturated with the gospel message, and makes no assumptions about the reader’s own commitment to Christ. It challenges the reader to assess their own worldview and outlook on life, and test to see if it lines up with God’s word. Andrew King was a university lecturer for many years, and knows the life of students well: after being one himself and interacting with so many students for such a long time! He now serves as a pastor at Highbury Baptist Church. He writes warmly and accessibly, with a pastor’s heart, and has included some useful study questions, as well as recommended further reading, for those wishing to delve deeper into each topic. Short and snappy, this book is particularly suited for those Christian young people you know who are considering university; but also for those already at university or even preparing to leave university. (There’s a short section “After you’ve been”, helping to prepare you for the rest of your life, and to have the right priorities moving forward). Very helpful, thoroughly recommended. I’ve found it a great book to buy as a gift for young people in our church considering or preparing for university.

Be Bright

As autumn approaches, many of us will see young people heading off from our churches to universities across the country. Depending on your location, you may also see students joining your church as they arrive in town. But how can we support them and help them grow in their faith? And more importantly, how can they support themselves during this exciting, challenging and often eye-opening few years? Dr Andrew King (Highbury Baptist) has written a really helpful little book, full of gems, that will help your young people start uni well equipped to stand for Jesus. The book is short, but as Michael Reeves says in his foreword, 'Andrew has rammed it chock-a-block with good, sensible advice.'
