Persistently Preaching Christ

Having been a member of the family at St Andrew the Great as a student certainly played a part in the fruit God has used this book to bear in my life. But the encouragements of how God has worked in an ordinary Anglican church, and the wisdom this book has to offer on everyday biblical church life mean that this book is an ABSOLUTE MUST for any Christian who wants their warmed hearts to sing with a joyful love for Christ. Mark Ashton's list and explanation of 8 convictions for the local church provide essential wisdom for the church leader, particularly that of sacrifice, a virtue which the church family at StAG know very well indeed. The history section of this book is very heart-warming, especially concerning God's work around the move to St. Andrew the Great from the Round, and also that of the student work. Jonny Lee's short paragraph on conversion and growth at StAG is a particular highlight. Finally, the letters written about and to the two Marks, Ashton and Ruston are very encouraging indeed. Having never met either of them, a loose portrait is painted showing them both to be sacrificial, biblical, and utterly godly men who loved to serve their Lord. Richard Coombs' stands out on Ruston, Matthew Roberts' stands out on Ashton. A superb book which has the potential to bring tears to your eyes, and make your heart sing over how our glorious God works in his world.

Persistently Preaching Christ

A very encouraging read. The book is about St Andrew the Great (StAG) Church in Cambridge and give reasons for its success over the last 50 years. The book keeps reminding us that StAG's "success" is based on 2 vital ingredients: (1) Bible centered and (2) person focused ministry. The book is made up of contributions by various people connected with St Andrew the Great and is written in honour of two men who sought to shepherd Gods people over 50 years. This is no uncritical hagiography however. The reader is constantly reminded of the God who grew and established this church. It is a helpful reminder that church ministry is all about investing in people and pointing them to the Jesus of the Bible. Due to the narrow focus of the book, I felt at times as if I was intruding on a private reunion of old friends as "in-jokes" and old stories are shared. The anecdotal nature of the book makes it rather easy to skip these sections though. Mark Ashtons chapter of his 8 convictions of the local church is a must read and applies to any church.
