Captivating words and pictures

I bought this book for my 7 year old son for Christmas, honestly because I saw it in real life and it's so beautifully illustrated (very timeless, and lino cut style)! We have now read it 3 days running, and on the 3rd read through he asked me why the Wizards beard was so long, and I asked what he thought it looked like, "A snake", he replied. I didn't explain any more, and we continued with the story. A few pages later a lightbulb went on in his head. "The Wizard is the devil isn't he? And the King is God!" What a joy for him to have enjoyed the book initially for it's story, rhyme and pictures, but then to understand the truth of the parable/allegory. This is a lovely book which I hope will be enjoyed for years to come in our home.
