A Good Reminder of Holiness, but Lacking Balance

I really wanted to give this book a higher rating because I have a deep appreciation for the Puritans. However, I find it difficult to do so. Some High Calvinists might resonate with the focus on judgment and sin, with little mention of God’s mercy and love—but I do not. Having grown up in a church that heavily emphasized the fear of God and hell, with little focus on His love, I’m particularly sensitive to this imbalance. While I can appreciate the Puritans' call to holiness, hearing this sermon in isolation, without the full context of the Gospel, would not have led to my conversion if I were in the audience. Our focus in conversion shouldn’t be solely on the fear of hell. It would have been more beneficial to hear about God’s other attributes—His mercy, grace, and love—alongside His justice. Unfortunately, this sermon doesn’t quite capture the fullness of the Gospel or the good news of Christ. While receiving Christ is the beginning, it’s only the start of a lifelong journey of faith and discipleship.
