Seeing someone you love hurting, and feeling like you can do nothing to help, is hard. We are so nervous about making their suffering worse that we are paralysed into doing nothing. James and Jennie Muldoon are familiar with suffering. They tell their story here, explain how they were supported and comforted by their brothers and sisters in Christ, and give ideas for where to start when we are helping those in pain.

Helping the Suffering

The most convicting part of this book is that it does not introduce anything revolutionary, but its purpose is to bolster the confidence of those Christians that seek to be encouraging but do not know how. We often think that our efforts are not enough and so we shy away from saying anything at all, when in actuality, the simplest kindest words can lift a struggling believer out of moments of complete crisis. This book has certainly encouraged me to be more mindful of my words and actions to those around me and to not be afraid to speak up even when I think it is just a small gesture, as to someone else it could be the difference in making it through the day and completely falling apart.

Helping the Suffering

James and Jennie’s very personal story gives us an insight into some of the real hardships that suffering can cause, particularly when that suffering becomes attritional. The lessons they have learnt have already been a real help to many in their church family who have read the book, both in terms of how we as Christians respond to our own suffering, and how we can help others when they are going through it.
