Expository preaching has been on the rise over the last five decades, with more and more pastors preaching through entire books of the Bible systematically. But few, if any, preachers have a long-term plan to teach every book of the Bible over a lifetime of ministry. Since the whole Bible is God’s Word to his people, all of Scripture is important for congregations to hear in order to grow as Christians. Written to make a case for the necessity of a long-term plan for preaching through the entire Bible instead of just randomly through individual books, this is not a book on how to preach, but rather on how to plan and prepare long-range preaching programs through the whole counsel of God.

Why preachers should do more planning

Andrew Reid and Tim Patrick make the case that over the course of a thirty-five year ministry, preaching pastors should aim to preach on every passage in the Bible to their congregations. There is much to commend in here, especially when it comes to the nuts and bolts of planning long-term teaching schedules to ensure that our ministries are providing a balanced diet from across all the Scriptures. I don’t think I’ve read a book quite like this and for that I’m thankful for the stimulation! I do have a few quibbles though: - much of the earlier chapters could simply be cut. There is a lot of filler material about the Bible, preaching and how we got the canon. - there is little to no recognition of the rhythms of the church calendar (and I say this as a committed low-church Baptist!) — in the run up to Christmas we will want to preach on the incarnation rather than Leviticus! So, how does this impact Reid and Patrick’s reluctance to preach a text more than once in a 35 year ministry? As I say — I enjoyed this. I found it stimulating and I will be taking some time to plan my sermon series across a 3 year schedule… even if I might repeat myself a bit.
