The Undomesticated Attributes of God

Quantity

For too long, Christians have domesticated God, bringing him down to our level as if he is a God who can be tamed. But he is a God who is high and lifted up, the Creator rather than the creature, someone than whom none greater can be conceived. If God is the most perfect, supreme being, infinite and incomprehensible, then certain perfect-making attributes must be true of him. Perfections like aseity, simplicity, immutability, impassibility, and eternity shield God from being crippled by creaturely limitations. At the same time, this all-powerful, all-knowing, and all-wise God accommodates himself, exhibiting perfect holiness, mercy, and love as he makes known who he is and how he will save us.

The attributes of God show us exactly why God is worthy of worship: there is none like him. Join Matthew Barrett as he rediscovers these divine perfections and finds himself surprised by the God he thought he knew.

None Greater

“None Greater” by Matthew Barrett is a very readable book – peppered with personal anecdotes and helpful illustrations. Matthew is clear in his explanation of the various attributes of God. As you move through the book you may be struck with how obvious are many of the qualities of God he describes. Exactly so! There is much here that you as a Christian already know intuitively – better, by Holy Spirit illumination – yet hardly we ever stop to consider. We might feel like saying, “Of course God is…” but the book clarifies and delineates what we have already understood about our God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. You will find yourself saying “Wow! I never thought of God quite like that,” and you will be motivated to worship and serve him more. There are twelve fairly lengthy chapters (but broken into helpful chunks) and perhaps the most important of these (it struck me so, anyhow) is the chapter on God’s simplicity: that he is not made up of a collection of attributes. Each and every facet of God is what he is in totality. The book is highly recommended for our 21st century where possibly much worship in our churches is dumbed–down through a lack of understanding and appreciation of our God. Soli Deo Gloria!
