Ecstatic after her surgery, Laura completely forgot her desperate prayer. She finally felt like the man she’d always wanted to be.
A few weeks later, Laura’s boss, a lesbian named Ellen*, came into Laura’s cubicle at work and asked her what was wrong.
“You’ve been moping around the office, you haven’t been working as hard, you’re depressed... what happened to the old Jake?”
Laura was stunned. Couldn’t Ellen see how happy she was after the surgery? She tried to forget about the conversation, but she couldn’t get it out of her mind.
She’s right... I’m not actually any happier. The surgery didn’t really change who I am... it just changed what I look like. My driver’s license says “male,” but that doesn’t actually change me.
Laura felt a great weight settling over her, but she twitched her shoulders angrily.
