Newly-jacketed biography | A story of persevering faith in new and difficult situations

I, starting up, the light did spy,

And to my God my heart did cry …

And when I could no longer look,

I blest His name that gave and took.’

Sailing to the New World at the age of eighteen, Anne Bradstreet was one of the first Puritan refugees to leave the shores of Britain. In search of freedom to worship without persecution, she struggled with chronic illness as she raised a family in the harsh environment faced by the early settlers. A gifted writer, Anne frequently recorded her experiences in poetry. When a collection of her poems were printed in London in 1650, she became the first published poet in America. World recognition was followed by catastrophe when her house burnt down, an event she describes in what has become her most famous poem.Faith Cook’s classic biography traces Anne’s early years through to her life in America and reveals a believer who lived-out an authentic faith in the face of the gritty realities of everyday life.

Anne Bradstreet

Faith Cook wonderfully executed this biography, sharing with us a glimpse of the life of the early Puritan settlers.

It beautifully displays and unpacks her poetry throughout as she describes her life from early childhood, through to 18 years old when she left for America, and throughout her remaining years on American soil as they forged a new life in pursuit of religious freedom.

All of this history was totally fascinating for me, but the greatest thing I was left with, was the sense of Anne’s deep gratitude, which she displayed in her poetry, despite experiencing great hardship. Life in the New World was by no means easy, yet she continually fixed her eyes on the Lord and gave Him her thanks. Her perspective was so inspiring.

A godly poet, wife and mother

Faith Cook brings to life the 17th Century New England poet Anne Bradstreet. Her poems give voice to her experiences with her husband, children, ill-health, and the civil war back in England. She trusted in Jesus from a young age and always recognised his providence. The background is the Great Migration of Puritans to New England. Once past initial survival, the colonists faced the twin perils of authoritarianism and nominalism. A fascinating read.
